Trekking Maroantsetra to Antalaha via Cap Est

In this hike, you will not only be in harmony with nature and see different kinds of lemurs, chameleons, many species of birds and incredible plants. Passing countless small villages you will get an insight into the daily life of the Malagasy people. You will see how they working on their fields, which are mainly rice fields, or in their small vanilla and coffee plantations. We will be walking towards the end of Maroantsetra till the Antegnambalana River. This is where the river trip starts to reach Andranofotsy village. From here we will be hiking along the seaside and at a certain point we will enter the tropical park Farakaraina. For those who are not in a rush we recommend to spend more time in this park and stay over in one of their bungalows.

The next village that we will be passing is the village Navana, which is a native fisherman village. On today's trip we will visit a vanilla plantation, a coffee plantation and we will see the beautiful rice fields, the green landscape , rich of endemic medicinal plants. We be able to discover some interesting fauna and flora during the hiking. We will also go through the villages, cross the streams, and see little cascades.

The trip of the day will end in the Fizono village, where we will spend the night in a bungalow of the local villagers.

Lunch from fresh seafood at the beach in Navana;

In Fizono will be prepared a delicious Malagasy dinner.


After breakfast, we will leave Fizono village. This track will let us see the different landscapes. We will be crossing streams and rice fields. Today we will again see a vanilla plantation. Along the way we will find many kinds of tropical fruits and you will be free to pick them, but always ask your guide before doing so.

The highlight is the short walk through Park Ambatolaidama. At the park entrance the trail starts at an elevation of 375m and goes up to 542m at the exit. The walk through the Masoala forest is steep, humid and very slippery on wet days. The forest is filled with the sound of numerous birds.

At the end of the day we will build-up our tents near one of the streams where we will stay for the night.

We will leave the village and go up to the mountains through the forest. In this day trekking we get away from the villages and civilization and we will be in close harmony with nature. On several parts along the track we will be crossing the river Bevontsira. We will more or less follow the river downstream and at the end of the day we will camp near the largest waterfall of this part of the country.

The target for today is to reach Bizôno. The track will be similar to yesterday's track. We will stay in the forest and the mountains, close to the river Bevontsira.

Today will be the last day that we will travel through the forest and we will reach the village Tanandavahely. It is quite a big village and here we will be able to buy some refreshments and souvenirs, like the bags and baskets made by the local people. We will spend the night in the houses that belong to the villagers.

Overnight in village. A delicious Malagasy dinner will be prepared.


Today we start our trip with pirogue (wooden canoe) along the riverside where we will be able to discover the crocodiles laying down on the riverbanks. We will reach the village Ambohitralanana after approximately four hours. Most likely you would like to stay a while in this beautiful place on the coast near Cap Est. Therefore, we will to stay for a day of relaxing and bathing in the ocean.

Ambohitralanana is a very nice place with a white sandy beach. It is a village of fisherman. You can see how the fishermen are busy repairing their nets and their boats as you walk around.

Lunches and dinners will be prepared by us on the ocean shore.

For the enterprising travelers, we can organize a sea kayaking and snorkeling.

Today we also have an excursion to the most eastern point of Madagascar - Cap Est. This can be done on foot, under sail, or on a kayak.

Once we have packed our bags and are ready to go, we head straight to the village Marofinaritra that will take about three hours. Earlier it could be done by car, but a wooden bridge on this part of the track has collapsed, which forces us to walk. In Marofinaritra for our car will be waiting us, to reach Antalaha.

In Antalaha we will stay in the resort/hotel Ocean Momo.  Once we are there, we will have time to enjoy this superb resort town and a nice opportunity to celebrate the completion of the trekking.

ANTALAHA – Antananarivo – Airport IVATO

Transfer to Sambava airport and flight to Tana. At the airport of Antananarivo you will be met by our guide and will take you to your hotel. The next day you will be transfer to Ivato International Airport for your international flight.
