Its colonial past resurfaces through wide boulevards with ancient colonnaded buildings straight stand side by side. For travellers, it’s a pleasant place, with long, wide avenues lined with flamboyants and palm trees, a seaside promenade and a good selection of restaurants.

The first option of the hike: Babakoto Trek. Indri-indri Calling

It is a five-day inviting jungle-trek. Babakoto is the Malagasy name for the Indri Indri, an appropriate name for this trek as you will spend nights in the jungle to be woken up by the Indri-indri’s early morning song. But that is for later. The Babakoto trek is a trek through the jungle where few tourists have ever set foot, with 3 nights spent in different villages and one night in a tent in the forest.

You have to keep up a stiff pace but you will see a lot.  You will get acquainted with the local customs and the local history in particular. So if you are in good shape and have some trekking experience this trek is a good option to venture in Fetraomby and surroundings, deep in the Malagasy rainforest, where the villagers will be proud to show you their culture, their forest and its animals. A unique experience! But beware, it is also the most challenging of our four treks in this region.

The second option of the hike: Sauvage hike

It is a five-day trek for the experienced hiker, in good health. Sauvage means ‘unspoiled’ or ‘wild’. The Sauvage hike will lead you through an area where the influence of mankind is minimal and tourists are hardly ever seen.  You will spend the nights in different villages.

The trek pass through areas where you will not meet any other travellers. There are no hotels in this remote area. You will be the guest of the local population and will thus experience the authentic Malagasy way of living. The unbelievable views, the varied landscapes and the beautiful rainforest, combined with the easy-going relaxed population will give you a once-in-a-lifetime experience no-one will ever be able to take away from you.

The thrill of rafting on the Maningory River

Today we begins a thrill adventure from your hotel in Toamasina city.

Maningory is one of big rivers which starts from the highlands and flows into the Indian Ocean. The river makes strong feelings in the heart of the eastern forest. The descent in raft is perfectly secure even though impressive waves sometimes force to navigate on IV or V class passageway. About 40 kilometers in rapids are scheduled for two days with a bivouac in the forest. Meeting is early in the morning, to enjoy as much as possible the day light. A 4×4 car will pick you up at 6.00 am to take you to the river, which is located about 3 hours of drive from Toamasina.

Mahambo. Bounty Island Experience and Surf destination

After the last 9 action packed days, we now get the opportunity to relax looking out onto the azure blue seas of the Indian Ocean... This place deserves to have you been here as long as possible. Mahambo is an extremely small paradise preserved, hemmed huge almost virgin beaches and coves but easily accessible. Many recreational sports including surfing in the company of fishermen and their sailing canoes. Ideal place to relax in peace.

Or the for restless ones among you, why not take advantage of the rolling waves and thrill of surfing (if you are not already a surfer, this is a memorable place to learn). Mahambo is a small coastal town and is still a relatively new destination on the East Coast.  After the opening of the first school of Surf, this small town has become a destination for surfers.

Or why not try your hand at sea kayaking? Whilst in Mahambo, you will be able to enjoy your time at your leisure. In the evenings you will be able to enjoy fresh seafood and cold beers in one of the local restaurants. Wherever you go, you will receive the warmest of welcomes from the residents of Mahambo. The tranquility is the main mode of the village but does get interrupted by a village party. A guitar will be playing somewhere most of the nights as song, beer & rum are part of what the locals call “The good, easy life in Mahambo”.

Accommodation at the hotel, Bed & Breakfast: l’Hôtel Lodge La Pirogue

Further along as you get closer to Palmarium you will see more and more fishermen tendering their fish traps in their dugout canoes as the village children wave you by. Bamboo rafts are used to transport various small goods up and down the canal as well as large canoes and some motor vessels.

After light refreshments and some entertainment from the resident Lemur family you have the balance of the day free for you to enjoy at your leisure either exploring the area or just relaxing. In this reserve, you can really leave all your cares behind! Soon you forget all your daily life sorrows trying tasty Malagasy food and self-made rum.
