Ascending the Pic Boby
in the Andringitra National Park

The Pic Boby hiking is a must-do when you go to Andringitra National Park. A nice relaxing three-day pace perfect for enjoy the scenery and admire the plants, that you would find nowhere else in the world. On this hike, no timeout: each meter you will walk offers a unique diversity of landscapes.

Circuit Imarivolanitra (or close to the skies): a 28km 3-days journey, it is the climbing of the peak Boby and the meeting with its high-altitude inhabitants after crossing the grassy savannas. The 3-days ascent of Pic Boby involves overnighting at campsites. Three days in the heart of this mineral world perfectly suited to hike, with sustained physical efforts but not excessive. Any occasional hiker, even beginners, will find yourself tempo to achieve the 5 to 6 hours walk per day. It is not a timed competition. This hike is more a slow ascending passing through passes and valleys, stunning viewpoints, meetings with local population in the heart of Red Island. The circuit will progressively lead us to the summit, go by the most beautiful sites: Idondy pass, Andrianalika, Riandahy and Riambavy waterfalls, peak Boby and at last the Sahanambo Valley.

Whether you call it Peak Boby, Boby Peak, Pic Boby, or Imarivolanitra, it won’t change the fact that it is the highest climbable mountain peak in all of Madagascar. Coming in at 2 658 meters, you feel every bit of it during that dark, chilly, early morning summit. Being at the top it is a surreal experience. Perhaps you have been to the top of many mountain peaks, but there is just something truly magical about this one. Before the sun rose high enough to light up the sea of clouds that will  filled the Namoly Valley, you will enjoyed tea, coffee and toast while watching the sunrise feeling like you had the entire Andringitra National park to ourselves.

Peak Boby was named by a Frenchmen who first summited it back in 1956. His dog, who made the trek with him, was named «Boby». The Malagasies actually don’t like the name, as the mountain is sacred to them, and naming it after a dog was offensive. The new name of the peak is Imarivolanitra, meaning ‘close to the sky.’ However, as is often the case, the peak is still known by its former name by all but the people that live there.

There are two ways to reach Peak Boby. The first is from the west via the Tsaranoro Valley. It is a much tougher hike coming from the west due to the greater elevation gain involved. The other way is from the east by way of the Namoly Valley park entrance. This is the way most visitors start their Andringitra National Park experience. Here follow is the main popular program:

Day 1: 4 hours walk climbing up to 600m high to a Betsileo village passing 2 sacred falls and caves, plateau of the orchids at 2000m, the camping ground is at 2050m. On the first day the path follows the same circuit that the Diavolana route. But after you have arrived at a bifurcation on the waterfalls, you continue at a steep path leaving the forest that comes out onto the Andohariana plateau and climbs up further on a higher plateau behind granite mountain tops, where the second campsite is located.

Day 2: On the second day you climb to the Pic Boby very early in the morning (to reach Pic Boby at sunrise, you’ll need to leave the plateau camp by 3 am) to try to arrive before the clouds of the day. The ascent up to 2658m takes about two or three hours, depending of you pace. The peak, which is the highest accessible peak of the country, is easy to climb. Beautiful sightseeing, rare plants and birds. Overnight camping.

Day 3: Descent towards the western slope towards Tsaranoro large cliff. From the Eastern part, there is a view of Imaitso forest. A 6 hours hike through lunar landscape leads you to what is called the “extraterrestrial” camping ground, a natural swimming pool is also found along the way.
