Rogues in the pirate
cemetery of Ile St Marie

Ile St Marie is the perfect destination for those fascinated by history. In the 17th and 18th Centuries, it’s said that up to 1000 pirates called the Island their home – including the infamous and widely-feared William Kidd and Thomas Tew. The island was the ideal dock for sea-weary bandits who wanted to build a home base and still dabble in the shipping trade in the 1600 and 1700s. All the Malagasy women liked the pirates - they went with all this money, silks and wonderful things. As a result of this colourful past, Sainte Marie island is proud to lay claim to one of the world’s only legitimate pirate cemeteries, which, set atop a hill, features crumbling headstones with worn-away engravings that hint at the Island’s existence as a paradise for shifty sailors. There remains 30 graves belonging to pirates who once lived there.

A black tomb in the middle is rumored to contain the island’s most famous inhabitant. According to local lore, Captain William Kidd is buried in the tomb, sitting in an upright position as punishment for his sins.

In fact, Kidd was hung and buried in England, but his legendary loot may be just beneath the waters of Île Sainte Marie.

In Kidd’s short career as a professional pirate—he started out in the pirate prevention business—he amassed untold riches. These lost treasures have inspired centuries of treasure hunters. Today, these riches are rumored to be buried at the bottom of the waters surrounding Île Sainte-Marie. His most famous boat, the Adventure Galley, was left docked near the island at the time of his death, and it stayed there, rotting into the ocean. Though it was said to be emptied of valuables, it has drawn many an explorer to Sainte Marie island.

Marine archaeologist Barry Clifford has unearthed another half a dozen shipwrecks off the island’s coast in the 15 years he’s spent exploring the area for sunken treasure. Beneath the surface of the water lie the remains of at least 13 vessels - a discovery dubbed the 'Valley of the Kings of pirate shipwrecks'.

Even if you do nothing else on Ile St Marie, then be sure that you visit this unique site and pay your respects to the colourful villains of Madagascar's swashbuckling past!
