For those who love the 3 S: Sun, Sea, and... Sand, mixed with adventure, the Baie de Lokaro is a heaven on earth in the South-East of Madagascar. Departure by car then by motor barge through narrow channels which connect several small coastal lakes along Fort Dauphin Bay (Lanirano Lake, Besaroy Lake, Ambavarano Lake, Anony River and more). It is one of the world’s last frontiers as they only exist in remote corners of the globe. A magnificent place: the white sandy beach under our feet, the forest behind us, the turquoise sea in front with small islands and brown rocks. It is a wild and beautiful postcard. We hike through the surrounding hills for a wide view of the area.
Just bear in mind it is isolated and well-preserved area of inland waterways, green hills and barrier beaches. A beach is just for you, with the local community - the Antanosy - who are fishermen and farmers... far from globalization with a money-based society. This is a perfect place for those seeking for a change of scene.
Lokaro bay and the islet attached is as close to paradise as you'll get. This bay is in the Lonely Planet as one of the top beaches in the world and that is true. Let yourself be tempted by this tourist destination that will take you to the heart of the Lokaro Bay.

Lokaro, some 25km northeast of Fort Dauphin, behind the four-peaked peninsula you can see on the horizon, is a perfect 1,5 km triple crescent of golden sands backed by dense coastal forest and sheltered from the ocean by rocky outcrops. The craggy islet of Nosy Lokaro is joined to the far end of the beach at low tide.
It is perfect when there is no wind blowing. The horseshoe island can be reached by walking over the sand bar but beware of the tides. Additionally to this, Lokaro boasts the only substantial coral habitat in the southeast of Madagascar and offers superb snorkeling opportunities.
The most popular activities at Lokaro is to wade through the river mouth to a beautiful little island with a white beach and calm water for snorkeling. Enjoy the sea at your feet. Swimming on the beach presents no risks. Our team wishes you a pleasant stay in South-East of Madagascar. Everything is designed for your rest and well-being: delicious food from the products of daily fishing and local cultures, long walks on the white sand beach and swimming at sunset.

Being well aware that the menu matters in terms of preserving biodiversity of Madagascar, a cook emphasizes dishes made with organic grown products manufactured in an environmentally responsible way. Strong relationships have been established with local producers: breeders, fishermen and farmers, many professionals who are using valuable, eco-friendly expertise. Cyril is in charge of the Pirate Camp, will welcome guests with his broad smile and is happy to prepare seafood and grilled dishes, not to mention his wonderful homemade bread and pancakes for breakfast.
Pirate Camp is a small complex with the eco-lodge lable and it operates independently and ecologicallywith solar panels providing electricity 12v to rooms and terraces, and the camp’s water pumps. The bed rooms are made of rustic local materials, with clean quality bed linen and mosquito nets on each bed; the bathroom and toilets are outside and are for both the bed rooms.
At your request, it is possible overnight a bivouac on the beach. Tents with mattresses and sheets can be provided for large groups or families. If you prefer to have your fresh crayfish, oysters, prawns or fish brought to you where you made your beach fire, we ask the local cook and you would get what you need.
