For those nature lovers who want a more in-depth acquaintance with the spiny forest of the South of Madagascar, we offer a new program: NATURALIST STUDIES SNSpé code - SNC code RENIALA - 2 days.
Reniala Private Reserve, which is also called the Domergue reserve, is an outstanding forest extending on 60 hectares, and is mainly composed of baobabs and thorny trees. Today, the reserve is a protected ecotouristic area where you will discover species proper to the Malagasy bush. This forest possesses an amazing wildlife and floral characteristics.
The reserve is located less than 1km from the Mozambique Channel near the village of Ifaty-Mangily. The towering spiny bushes are home to more than 2000 plants species (many of them local endemic), some spectacular and very old baobabs (there is a giant baobab of 13 m diameter, local people fondly call it “tea pot” due to its appearance. It is told to be 1500 years old) and a complete endemic plants family, the Didieraceae. In Reniala reserve, you can admire many endemic plants of the spiny forests, among the famous baobabs (Adansonia rubrostipa), Pachypodium, Euphorbia and other outstanding growths. Reniala includes a botanical trail and a bird sanctuary.
Meanwhile the spiny forest belongs to the last pieces of primary forests of the South. Alongside birds, you will also find tortoises, reptiles, snakes and microcebs, that will delight all fauna enthusiasts.

*Introduction to the history of nomenclature and the origin of plant names; *Presentation of the relationship between man and the plant kingdom through examples of the local flora, adaptation to dry media; *Introduction to the recognition of the main families of plants and the most common species and their ecology (use of a key of determination, use of our 5 senses); *Approach to observation and determination tools; *Introduction to the general functioning of the ecosystem and the ecology of some plants. *Use of medicinal plants, cosmetics, adaptation to environmental conditions (SNSPE code) culture construction (SNC code).
Field trips alternate with indoor sessions for the determination of plants and the provision of theoretical elements.
Day 1. SNC and SNSPE: Medicinal and cosmetic plants
Morning: theoretical lessons and field work on botany and local flora in relation to remedies and cosmetics. Provision of theoretical elements in the classroom. Field trip, careful harvest of samples. lunch.
Afternoon: Workshops for the preparation of medicinal and cosmetic herbal preparations (balm, maceration...). Night tour of the reserve.
Dinner: Baobabs Party. Extensive revision of plants (for those who want it). Identification of the samples (for those who want it). Extinction of the lights at 22h.
Day 2: SNSPE Adapting plants to their environment.
Morning: Ornithological visit at 6 am and then return to breakfast. 9-10 h: theoretical contributions on botany and local flora in relation to adaptation to the environment. 10-13 h: field trip, Vondro braiding workshop. Lunch.
Afternoon: theoretical contributions on the botany and the local flora in connection with the house constructions, dugout canoe, cart. End of the course.
Please note: all participants registered for the overnight stay at the "Auberge des Makis" in full board (lunch, dinner, night, breakfast).
