Ile aux Prunes (Plum Island).
Tamatave’s best-kept secret

Do you want to relax a bit and be closer to the ocean? Take our Relaxing visit: Ile aux Prunes (Plum Island). Tamatave's best-kept secret and little paradise!

When strolling along the white sandy beaches of Toamasina you cannot but spot the intriguing island a little offshore from Toamasina with its lighthouse like an admonishing finger. This beautiful little island covered with dense forest (approximately 30-45 min by boat) provides an excellent opportunity for an excursion. The island is oval-shaped, measuring 400 meters by 2 kilometers. It is surrounded by coral reef, with a single opening allowing access.

A one-day trip to the uninhabited island some way offshore from Toamasina, to relax, to swim or snorkel, underwater life here is superb, a mask and a tuba will help you to approach closely the wonderful ocean wildlife and bathing is also safe, since the coral barrier keeps the sharks away.  You can also walk through the islands` forests to climb the lighthouse, to see the Flying Fox, and maybe the whales. The lighthouse on Prune Island, also called the Nosy Alanana Lighthouse, is actually pretty impressive. It is the tallest lighthouse in all of Africa at 66 meters tall.  An excursion to Ile aux Prunes includes the following highlights:
