Excursion Vinanibe Lake (Ambinanibe)

At 7 km west of Fort Dauphin there is a large lake, bordered by a village of hospitable fishermen and famous for its prawns.  The Malagasy call this place "Ambinanibe", which means “big pass”, since for accessing the place, the river Efaho, fringed by swamps and rice paddies, must be crossed and there is a large passage where the lake flows into the bay connecting with the ocean. Lake Andriambe (Ambinanibe) is sometimes also called Vinanibe, because the former name of the lake during the French colonization was Vinani Be.

Ideal place for lovers of peace and nature, for walks or family swimming outings, it is also well known by surfers since it is the best surf spot in Fort Dauphin. The lake is perfect for sailing and the whole area of hills and dunes is great for strolling. It is possible to reach this place also on foot (about 1h 30).

Visiting the lake is an excursion that cannot be missed, because the site of the village is beautiful. The immense lake serves as a receptacle for the rainwater of the Anosy chain and is bordered by a virgin beach sparkling with white sand.

This lake is home to the famous shrimp throughout the region: you will see the traps that are fixed on stilts erected near the banks. The pass (opening between the lake and the ocean) is open every year from December to June allowing marine species to enter the lake: a fishing activity is therefore quite intense and diverse. From the lake pass, called "vinany", and all along the beach to the west coast of the peninsula of Ehoala there are large sand dunes. Sometimes you see the children of the village surfing on the sand with coconut leaves. The "pros", who practice with surfboards, call it "Sand Surfing". You can also watch the young people of the village surf the waves with the boards carved in raw wood. They use the wood of broken canoes, the "vitagno": a tree found in the lands of Anosy and Androy which gives a light wood, very floating and resistant.

At the top of these dunes you can admire a splendid panorama of the ocean, the village nestled in the hollow of the coconut palms and mountains to the north. If you have the chance to stay longer, the sunset at this place is fantastic. On the beach you will find many shells and sometimes see fishermen repairing their canoes. Feel free to walk up to them, say hello in Malagasy, show your interest in what they do, they will be surprised and you will receive the best welcome.
