Excursion Mandena Conservation Zone

The forests of Mandena are in southeastern Madagascar, about a 20-minute drive northeast of Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin). This protected reserve was established by QMM to protect 230 ha of rare littoral forest in the region that is the centre of their controversial mining project and is now mainly community-managed.

The six species of lemur in Madena area are still shy, no doubt they will become habituated in time, but you will see plenty of birds and reptiles meanwhile.

In August 2009 it was announced the discovery of a rodent of 7.5 kg (brown rat) in this park. It's five times more than the biggest known so far! This news has hit the headlines on the internet on some animal blog. Until this discovery is affirmed scientifically, you will take pleasure in strolling in this area with beautiful flora which offers a botanical circuit crisscrossing the forest, discover lemurs and birds of the region.

In 2001 a troop of red-collared brown lemurs (Eulemur collaris) were relocated to Mandena from a small threatened area of forest outside the conservation zone. It is a completely different from the Berenty Private Reserve experience, it has been thoughtfully conceived to give tourists as much variety as possible, and the local Antanosy are involved. The COGEMA (Mandena Management Committee) administers the park as an association because the conservation of this area is managed by the local population. The visit takes between 2 and 4 hours and the money collected from tourists is paid into the account of the association.

The conservation area includes 160 ha of the least degraded fragments of forest and 60 ha of wetlands. 22 species of flora are endemic to this region, of about 200 species of large trees. This reserve protects a particular habitat and is home to beautiful varieties of orchids and nepenthes that grow in abundance.

There is an easy circuit which takes three to four hours and a boat trip which takes you down a pandanus-fringed waterway. Then it is a walk back along another forest trail to the visitor centre and tree nursery.

During the daylight hours, we can find the red-collared brown lemur (Eulemur collaris) and the southern bamboo lemur (Hapalemur meridionalis). At night, we can see the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) as well as two species of Cheirogaleus, the greater dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus major) and the fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius).
