Evatraha Peninsula
and Lokaro bay Tour, one-day

This river expedition is magnificent and is certainly one of the activities to be done first when you come to Fort Dauphin.

The Baie de Lokaro lies about 15km northeast of Fort Dauphin along the coast, or about 40km by road. Two hours from Fort Dauphin - the notion of distance doesn't mean a lot because the road is as mysterious and an experience in itself as the way to heaven - you also have to ride on the beach and cross small rivers from time to time.  But you literally forget the dancing part in the car once you arrive there.

Just bear in mind it is isolated and well-preserved area of inland waterways, green hills and barrier beaches. It is one of the world’s last frontiers as they only exist in remote corners of the globe. A magnificent place: the white sandy beach under our feet, the forest behind us, the turquoise sea in front with small islands and brown rocks. It is a wild and beautiful postcard. A beach is just for you, with the local community - the Antanosy - who are fishermen and farmers... far from globalization with a money-based society. This is a perfect place for those seeking for a change of scene.

From the freshwater lake of Lanirano, just 5 kilometers from the center of Fort-Dauphin, a narrow canal winds its way between the lakes and the peninsula of Evatraha. Sometimes these twisty river arms are called "arroyos": in terms of geology the arroyos are temporary streams that fill up when it rains, out of these arms are always in water, fed by the rivers that descend from the mountain. One can cross this first lake by boat or canoe, in the background the massif of the peak Saint-Louis and the mountains of Bezavona which make up an admirable picture which becomes superb for the return to the setting sun.

We then enter the river arms that connect the lakes between them. We sail among the pandanus, elephant ears, giraffe necks, ravinalas, reeds and arums. We can also see mangroves where many mangroves grow and along islands covered with eucalyptus. At the heart of this aquatic vegetation are many species of birds and fishermen on their canoe. If we are very lucky we can meet some crocodiles, but most of the time they hide and flee the men. These arms of rivers are called in Malagasy "andalambolavo" which means "track of rats".

After the exit of Lake Lanirano we pass by the village of Andrakaraka: women wash their linen in the river and children greet you with a cordial "hello vaza!" It leads to Lake Besaroy and Lake Ambavarano. We approach the QMM weir (the ilmenite mine held by QIT Minerals Madagascar, subsidiary of the Rio Tinto group) to take the look overlooking the river Anony. This river is the final stage of the lakes flowing to the sea through the pass at Evatraha. We reach the peninsula of Evatraha where we land in the village of Anena.
