The forests of Mandena are in southeastern Madagascar, about a 20-minute drive northeast of Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin). This protected reserve was established by QMM to protect 230 ha of rare littoral forest in the region that is the centre of their controversial mining project and is now mainly community-managed.

Ideal place for lovers of peace and nature, for walks or family swimming outings, it is also well known by surfers since it is the best surf spot in Fort Dauphin. The lake is perfect for sailing and the whole area of hills and dunes is great for strolling.

This forest reserve deserves much greater recognition. Its exotic tropical setting, with mountains for a backdrop, is prettier than Berenty. You can take a boat trip on the river bordering the reserve, discover a forest of bamboos and explore many other enchanting spots. In the forest there are waterfalls and natural swimming pools that offer quiet and secluded picnic sites.

The Baie de Lokaro lies about 15km northeast of Fort Dauphin along the coast, or about 40km by road. Two hours from Fort Dauphin - the notion of distance doesn't mean a lot because the road is as mysterious and an experience in itself as the way to heaven - you also have to ride on the beach and cross small rivers from time to time.  But you literally forget the dancing part in the car once you arrive there.

The Domaine de la Cascade is located near the village of Manantantely and offers a plantation, a campsite, a restaurant and the opportunity to walk along the river and climb Mount Andranara for a magnificent view of the southern region Anosy. This pleasant park, about 9km from the Total station on the road to Ambovombe from Fort Dauphin, is an easily overlooked spot.

The Sahatany Pegmatite Field is situated 25 km south-west of the town of Antsirabe, and covers an area about 150 km2. More than 100 pegmatites of both beryl type LCT pegmatites and complex type LCT pegmatites are found in this area, and many of them have been worked for gem polychromatic tourmalines, rose beryl, spodumene, rose quartz etc. The pegmatites are hosted in a Precambrian tectonic unit that consists mainly of schists, quartzites, and marbles.

You will do what any other tourists will not do, climb up the highest tree for the sunset experience. Climbing up this 18 meter tree might seem be daunting at first, but it is easy with the pulley system, only 10-15mins up the tree with some leg effort and little arm strength. It gets a little tiring midway and you rest for a few seconds to admire the whole scene while a bunch of other tourists will be watching us.

The trekking is done from Tulear on quads. The circuit winds along the Onilahy river for 70 km. Before reaching the lakes, we cross the forest inhabited with lemurs. The Seven Lakes is a place where the water flows in cascades from lake to lake above the river. It is located in a forest heritage “xerophylic thickets” on the Belomotse Plateau. The return trip can be done on the river with a traditional pirogue or a kayak as an option, but it will take at least another couple of days.

Miary’s village, located 10 km of Tulear, is well-known for its sacred banyan which is a fig tree characterized by long descending branches that reach the ground and thus look like roots. The tree, which is protected by a wooden fence, is so large that resembles a forest itself!

Reniala Private Reserve, which is also called the Domergue reserve, is an outstanding forest extending on 60 hectares, and is mainly composed of baobabs and thorny trees. Today, the reserve is a protected ecotouristic area where you will discover species proper to the Malagasy bush. This forest possesses an amazing wildlife and floral characteristics. The reserve is located less than 1km from the Mozambique Channel near the village of Ifaty-Mangily.

The Saint Augustin’s bay is located near of Tulear and benefits from a geostrategic location at the mouth of the Onilahy river. Due to its practical aspects, the region was historically a preferred location for spice traders and slavers. Sailors from all over Europe made the bay their landing zone. Nowadays, Saint Augustin is a quiet Vezo fishing village and is disturbed only by divers and submarine hunting enthusiasts.

The highlight of Cape Sainte Marie Special Reserve are the turtles, both terrestrial and marines. The two endemic species of terrestrial turtles are specially significant: the radiated and the spider turtle are already very rare and have along this coast its last wild habitat. The Reserve contains in fact the largest populations of these two threatened turtles, and one of the highest densities of turtles in the world. There are no less than 1000 at square km! Unfortunately, it becomes an increasingly rare element of the ecosystem because of poaching.

Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve – a region of dry forest habitats in southern Madagascar – offers unique flora and fauna. It is absolutely striking. Bezà Mahafaly contains the most amazing hidden treasures: playful lemurs, a spiny forest, Nile crocodiles, slithering snakes and much more. It is the only National Protected Area in Madagascar that includes the unique and dramatic gradient from riverine to spiny forest. Wildlife is abundant at Bezà, with many species endemic to the island and some found only in the south.

To get to the extreme northern tip of Madagascar, from Antsiranana, known as Diego Suarez, a 4x4 vehicle is essential.

It is the roof of Madagascar with its peaks Maromokotra, at 2876m above sea level, the unique place of Malagasy flora with endemic species, the classified area among the nine precious stones of the biodiversity of Madagascar. Tsaratanana Integral Reserve lies about 80 km south-east of Ambanja.

The park main attractions are of course the tsingy formations and the rich wildlife. This chaos of limestone rocks carved for thousands of years by rain and wind offers over 2000 ha a succession of caves and diaclases (narrow passages). On its sharp points grow baobabs and rare pachypodiums. It's a bit like visiting the more-famous Tsingy de Bemaraha, but without the crowds. Trails weave among the rocks, and rope bridges cross the canyons. A true sanctuary of nature.

The course of the river is punctuated with islets which shelter an important avifauna. This lively waterway offers scenic performances.

The formation of these caves dates from the secondary era (about 65 million years) and continues until the Quaternary (2,5 million years). The strong rainfall of this period allowed the water to erode the calcareous rocks and to constitute these caves. Fossils of lemurs and dwarf hippopotamus aged 18 000 years were discovered there.

The Cirque Rouge (Red circus) it is a ground near Mahajanga which presents a mosaic of different colors passing from the pink to chestnut with the bordeau and which is illuminated in all its splendor under the effect of the sun.

The Antrema forest station has been classified as the first Malagasy biocultural site since 2000. This reserve consists of 153 plant species (76% endemic), 23 amphibian and reptile species, 75 bird species, 5 species of lemurs, including the famous "crowned sifaka".

Created in 1898, it was originally an experimental garden, and offers now a good insight view of lemur species, as well as a selection of Madagascar’s flora. The park is a project of the primate department of the Duke University and makes a sensational effort in lemur breeding and conservation. Lemur will come to eat bananas in your hands.

This itinerary is ideal for those who appreciate navigating peaceful water canals, through lagoons, rivers and lakes. On the inland-shores there are areas where the plants are abundant, especially in the remaining pockets of tropical forest. The park is the most visited protected area in Madagascar and a popular highlight when discovering the Great South. It is one of the country's most dramatic and pleasant national parks. The park ranges from just over 500m up to 1268m above sea level and the canyons are in places as much as 200m deep. Isalo offers a fantastic, colorful landscape and incredible panoramas. It is not just about the colors and shapes of the land damaged by the erosion, but also the great scenery and the general silence that surrounds everything. It is also a set that all "Bara" people consider as sacred.

Nestled amidst the southwest terrains of sweeping canyons, dramatic bluffs and jutting rock formations, the Isalo National Park offers some rewarding trekking opportunities amongst natural pools and through uniquely Jurassic landscapes. Hiking in Isalo is superb.

Madagascar is one of the high places of surfing and Anakao internationally recognized for its surf spots. Anakao is surrounded by reefs and this creates some great surfing potential. The name of this trek comes from the Malagasy name for the Silky Sifaka, a beautiful white lemur which is found only in this area.

It is a small raid from Diego Suarez. Cap Diego takes its name from the peninsula of Cap Diego, natural harbor perfectly sheltered. This site, presenting strategic defense assets, was very active in the 19th century, at the time of the French administration.

The birds show a very high degree of endemism with several bird families endemic to Madagascar and the neighbouring Comoros Islands. Over 100 species out of a total of over 200 breeding species are endemic to Madagascar. There are few terrestrial migrants as Madagascar seems to be off the usual Palearctic/African flyway. A total of 44 species of global conservation concern occur in Madagascar.

Few places in the world are as threatened as the native environments of Madagascar and its nearby islands. Fortunately, international conservation agencies have come to the aid of Madagascar, and more areas are being set aside as reserves and national parks. Each year new species are discovered and described, and species previously thought extinct or nearly so are rediscovered.
